According to Indian
spiritual almanac, the sacred event of नागपञ्चमी
उपासन (nāgapañcamī upāsana – serpent-fifth contemplation) is
observed today in the month of ஆடிமாசம் / आषाढमास (āḍimāsam / āṣāḍhamāsa – July mid to Aug mid) across
many parts of अखण्डभारतीयौपखण्ड (akhaṇḍabhāratīyaupakhaṇḍa – expanded Indian sub-continent).
Here, esoterically speaking the event has deeper occult significance. नाग (nāga - serpent) has always been a spiritual motif cutting across ancient religious cultures across the world, and particularly in ancient सनातनधर्म हिन्दुत्वस्य (sanātanadharma hindutvasya – eternal spirituality of Hinduism) to represent the महाकुण्डलिनीशक्ति (mahākuṇḍalinīśakti – supreme coiled (biomagnetic) energy) theologized variously with multiple esoteric and exoteric narratives including but not limited to the following
- वासुकी (vāsukī),
- आधिशेष (ādhiśeṣa),
- भुजङ्गी (bhujaṅgī),
- अनन्तशेष (anantaśeṣa),
- नागिनी (nāginī),
- नागराज / नागेश्वर (nāgarāja / nāgeśvara),
- पतञ्जलि महऋषि (patañjali mahaṛṣi),
- நாகாத்தம்மன் (nākāttam'maṉ) etc.
Similarly ஆடிமாசம் / आषाढमास (āḍimāsam / āṣāḍhamāsa – July mid to Aug mid) which corresponds to Gregorian calendar between July mid to August mid. Astrologically (and thereby astronomically) speaking, the beginning of ஆடி (āḍi) corresponds to the celestial event of कर्क सङ्क्रान्ति (karka saṅkrānti - Cancer transition) that is, the annual transition of the सूर्य (sūrya - sun) to the कर्कटक राशि / கடக ராசி (karkaṭaka rāśi / kaṭaka rāsi - Cancer Zodiac) from here on begins दक्षिणायण सूर्यस्य (dakṣiṇāyaṇa sūryasya - southward movement of sun) - theologized as भगवान् श्री सूर्य नरायण (bhagavān śrī sūrya narāyaṇa). I have tried to provide a deeper insight into the spiritual significance of this month in the following blog:

Similarly, the number पञ्च (pañca - five) also is a esoterically
multivalent concept having deep occult significance in the सनातनधर्म हिन्दुत्वस्य (sanātanadharma
hindutvasya – eternal spirituality of Hinduism) cutting across multiple domains including but not limited
to
- पञ्च कञ्चुकाः शुद्धाशुद्ध मायायाः (pañca kañcukāḥ śuddhāśuddha māyāyāḥ - five cloaks of pure-impure mystery)
- पञ्चविध कार्यवस्थाः बद्धात्म चैतन्यस्य (pañcavidha kāryavasthāḥ baddhātma
caitanyasya – five-fold effectual states of corporeal soul-consciousness)
- पञ्चविध स्थूलभूत तत्त्वानि अप्रवृत्ति चैतन्यस्य (pañcavidha sthūlabhūta tattvāni apravṛtti
caitanyasya – fivefold gross material principles of inertial-consciousness)
- पञ्चतन्मात्राः (pañca tanmātrāḥ - five tendencies)
- पञ्चज्ञानेन्द्रियाणि (pañca jñānendriyāṇi – five cognitive senses)
- पञ्चकर्मेन्द्रियाणि (pañca karmendriyāṇi – five conative senses)
- पन्चप्राणाः (panca prāṇāḥ - five vital-breaths)
- पञ्चमहायज्ञाः (pañca mahāyajñāḥ - five grand sacrifices)
- पञ्चाक्षरमन्त्र (pañcākṣaramantra – five syllabled mantra) etc.
For example, according to शैवागम शास्त्र (śaivāgama śāstra) there the पञ्च कञ्चुकाः शुद्धाशुद्ध मायायाः (pañca kañcukāḥ śuddhāśuddha māyāyāḥ - five cloaks of pure-impure mystery) viz. काल (kāla - time), नियति (niyati - causation), विद्या (vidyā - knowledge), राग (rāga - desire), कला (kalā - skill) which encapsulate the underlying divinity while in the वेदान्त शास्त्र (vedānta śāstra) these correspond to the पञ्च कोशाः मायायाः (pañca kośāḥ māyāyāḥ - five sheaths of mystery) viz. अन्नमयकोश (annamayakośa – food-predominant sheath), प्राणमयकोश् (prāṇamayakośa – vital-predominant sheath), मनोमयकोश (manomayakośa – mind-predominant sheath), विज्ञानमयकोश (vijñānamayakośa – wosdom-predominant sheath) & आनन्दमयकोश (ānandamayakośa – bliss-predominant sheath).
In other words, the शिवानन्द ताण्डव (śivānanda tāṇḍava – auspicious bliss dance) is eternally happening in a multi-tiered hierarchical continuum traversing through the physical / terrestrial, vital, psychic as well as gnostic, and even spiritual realms which form a concentric hierarchy of consciousness viz. And such a concentric heirarchy is applicable at all the three levels of the पञ्चविध कोशाः अविद्यामाया चैतनस्य (pañcavidha kośāḥ avidyā māyā caitanasya - fivefold sheaths of nescient mystery-consciousness), the पञ्चविध कार्यवस्थाः बद्धात्म चैतन्यस्य (pañcavidha kāryavasthāḥ baddhātma caitanyasya – five-fold effectual states of corporeal soul-consciousness) and the पञ्चविध स्थूलभूत तत्त्वानि अप्रवृत्ति चैतन्यस्य (pañcavidha sthūlabhūta tattvāni apravṛtti caitanyasya – fivefold gross material principles of inertial-consciousness)
स्थण्डिल स्थानस्य (sthaṇḍila sthānasya – boundary of locus) (A) | कोश अविद्यामाया चैतनस्य (kośa avidyāmāyā caitanasya - sheath of nescient mystery-consciousness) (X) | कार्यवस्था बद्धात्म चैतन्यस्य (kāryavasthā baddhātma caitanyasya – effectual state of corporeal soul-consciousness) (Y) | स्थूलभूत तत्त्व अप्रवृत्ति चैतन्यस्य (sthūlabhūta tattva apravṛtti caitanyasya – gross material principle of inertial-consciousness) (Z) | |
1 | புரப்புரம் /बाह्यबाह्य (purappuram / bāhyabāhya – external outer) | अन्नमयकोश (annamayakośa – food-predominant sheath) | जाग्रत् अवस्था (jāgrat avasthā – waking state)
| पृथिवि तत्त्व (pṛthivi tattva – earth principle) |
2 | புரம் / बाह्य (puram/bāhya – outer) | प्राणमयकोश् (prāṇamayakośa – vital-predominant sheath) | स्वप्न अवस्था (svapna avasthā – dreaming state)
| अपस् तत्त्व (apas tattva – water principle) |
3 | அகப்புரம் /अन्तर्बाह्य (agappuram / antarbāhya - internal outer) | मनोमयकोश (manomayakośa – mind-predominant sheath) | सुषुप्ति अवस्था (suṣupti avasthā – sleeping state)
| अग्नि तत्त्व (agni tattva – fire principle) |
4 | அகம்/ अन्तर (agam – inner) | विज्ञानमयकोश (vijñānamayakośa – wosdom-predominant sheath) | तुरीय अवस्था (turīya avasthā – trance state) | वायु तत्त्व (vāyu tattva – air principle) |
5 | அகமகம் / अन्तरन्तर (agamagam / antarantara – internal inter) | आनन्दमयकोश (ānandamayakośa – bliss-predominant sheath) | तुरीयातीत अवस्था (turīyātīta avasthā – transcendent state)
| आकाश तत्त्व (ākāśa tattva – vaccum principle) |
